Shrewsbury Wargames Society – Tournament Recap Ten opponents battled it out on a torrentially rainy Saturday at Shrewsbury Wargames Society to determine who reigns supreme in the Mortal Realms (and win some SWS dice!).
Fun was had by all, with every player receiving at least one vote for "Most Sporting Opponent"—a true testament to the great atmosphere. In the end, that honour went to soon-to-be member Daz – well deserved, and congratulations! Josh claimed first place, showcasing incredible tactical foresight and skill throughout the day. Meanwhile, Dom, another soon-to-be member, won Best Painted with his beautifully crafted Gloomspite Gitz army – a real standout on the tabletop. We’re already looking forward to the next event, so keep an eye out if you want to get involved! A huge thank-you to everyone who took part and made running my first tournament such a smooth and enjoyable experience. Check out all the incredible armies and action shots here.
Interested in Spearhead? It’s a great way to get started – all you need is one box of minis, and there’s a growing community ready to welcome new players. Cheers, Owen
Adam's arranged a MESBG day today (Sunday 7th) so the club will be open. If you haven't booked already, feel free to turn up and join in the spectacle of Middle Earth heroes and villains as they battle it out.
Tables are likely to be available for other games.
On Sunday the 6th of July SWS hosted a Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition Games Day!
All participants enjoyed a fun day of gaming, with lots of comical moments and laughter. We even had Cupcakes and Pizza too!
In the Eldar vs White Scars Game we had tanks and Marine bikes manoeuvring for their advantage.. whilst a Heroic / idiotic charge was performed by an eldar storm squad!!
We also had an Eldar vs Tyranid brutal game with eldar running from tyranid horrors at all times whilst desperately pouring everything is stop the Hive Tyrant on its rampage!
Meanwhile Imperial Guard took on a force of Battle Sisters… and to the surprise of all the Guard won in close combats too!
Orks unsurprisingly also made an appearance causing carnage with Kila-Kans, whilst Gretchin formed a bridge in a water feature for Boyz to safely cross!
SWS are looking to do another 3rd edition Games day in August, so stay tuned and if you are interested in coming along make it known to us on our Facebook pages!
On Saturday the 12th of April we hosted a Middle Earth Battle Strategy Game tournament at the SWS club house. We had 10 fantastic players battle it out through three randomly selected scenarios: Destroy the Supplies, Fog of War, and Reconnoitre.
We were lucky to have 10 unique armies (the 500-point MESBG meta is currently overwhelmed by Eagles) and 10 fantastic players who gave their all with victories, defeats, draws, and lots of fun!
The winner was new club member and first-time tournament player Jake with his Lurtz’s Scouts list! And runner up was another new member, and I believe first time tournament player Ian with his Eagles! Two new members, smashing it on their first tournament. If you would like to see the blow by blow scoring you can find it on Longshanks here: https://www.longshanks.org/event/22817/
Our next Tournament is July 27th with the event TBC – watch this space – but the theme will be Dragon Sickness and the points will be 700. Hopefully we will have the new scenarios by then too!
If you are interested in playing some MESBG feel free to shoot me a message or post on the group. We have an avid and growing MESBG community at SWS and you are bound to find a fun game with good people who are more than happy to take you through the rules! The tournaments we run are casual but give you a flavour of what the ranked tournaments feel like. We also have a club team for the Great British Hobbit League, who knows where we will get to next!

29TH March 2025 saw a small unit of SWS members stand shoulder to shoulder with other wargames societies and business to support the Get in the Game event held at RAF Cosford. Organised by “Company of Makers” this event showcased a number of different game settings and formats on display with loads of involvement for those that attended. Primarily aimed at Veterans and those currently serving within the Armed forces, there were also a host of various ages and backgrounds visiting the event. This is the 2nd event that has been done by the company, the first being held at the Army Flying museum last year and hopefully more to come.
SWS had the pleasure of running two tables at the event. One being based on the Check your 6 Jet Age along with a more historical setting of a Castle Siege. With veterans scattered through our ranks at SWS as well as serving members it was a fulfilling day for all those involved, with a few people expressing interest in joining our society which is always a positive!
